Why do you let your kids ….?
Because they’re kids. They will only be little once. I am their safe space. This is their time to ask questions, to make mistakes, to try something new and maybe fail, to be silly, to have big feelings, to explore and learn.
Why did you choose to homeschool?
At first I didn’t. I thought I would be like all the “regular” moms and send my kids to public school – until it was time to actually do it. I didn’t like the idea of being away from my kids for that long every day. I didn’t like the idea of someone else teaching them what I knew I could in a class too large to get individualized attention. I didn’t like the idea of them being around the kinds of attitudes and thinking that I was exposed to in public school. As they got closer to school age, I became hyper aware of bullying, intolerance and (the big one) school shootings. I just couldn’t do it. It was a process to adjust to and we had (and still do have) some really bad days but I’d do it again in a heartbeat. The flexibility it gives us is just worth so much more than I could ever really describe. We are able to slow down when the kids aren’t getting something and fly through stuff they already have a great understanding of, we can take mental health days when we need them, we’re able to schedule appointments whenever and not worry about them missing valuable educational time, the ability to squeeze in random life lessons during the day – the list literally goes on and on. The keyword here is flexibility. Love that for them, love it for us.
